Flash Fiction About Having Nothing Left

It's not about life for me anymore. It's about love, loss and cold day old spaghetti. There's a half-empty can of Pepsi sitting beside the container in the refrigerator. It won't satisfy my thirst though, and it's probably as flat as sugar water by now.

I lean over the leavings in bare feet and boxer shorts. The glow of the refrigerator light stretches across the dim apartment. It feels massive and empty.

There's a knock at the door. A man appears in a bright white suit--bright enough to sear my eyes in the dark. His face is wise and cheerful with smile lines around his mouth.

"It's time," he whispers.

I take one last look at my darling Madeleine, stretched across the couch, frozen in a daze. Her chest rises and falls with each shallow breath.

She had told me once she was depressed--something bothered her. After seventeen years in this dump we'd fallen into a rut, but I didn't want to hear it.

She has a tissue pressed against her mouth and the blood soaked knife still hangs from her other hand. I take one last look at my crumpled corpse in the glow of the refrigerator light.

I should've listened, but I never listened.

The man in white guides me away.

  • Five TV Shows My Son Shouldn't Watch, but Does

There's at least a thousand articles out there stating that TV viewing for children should be avoided, or at least curbed. Many of which are very detailed, showing facts and figures on why kids watching TV is a bad thing. I have read many of them, and I've tried my best to avoid just letting my son, who's two-and-a-half years old, watch too much. I can honestly say, I've failed miserably. Below is a list of five shows, my son watches, but probably shouldn't. - 2 months ago

  • How to Watch Hockey Like a Pro : Part 2

In my time as a hockey fan, I've always considered it one of the easiest games to follow. The objective is simple, and the means are fairly apparent. However, there are a lot of other things going on that can make it a deeper game, such as offensive and defensive coverage. - 2 months ago

  • How to Watch Hockey Like a Pro : Part 1

Ice hockey is an incredibly fast and fascinating sport. It's exhilerating, and it doesn't take much knowledge to enjoy it. However, if you watch long enough, certain things may begin to stand out to you--things that may even bother you, or maybe you'll shout your concerns to the players from your seat in the stands. - 3 months ago

I found it really had a twist. I never expected Madeleine to be the guilty one! It was short but packed a lot of feeling leading the reader to really think. Voted up.
