Top 6 Ice Hockey Movies for Kids

Ice hockey is an inspirational sport that has produced several good movies. Many of which can be shared by both parents and children. This is a list of some of the best ice hockey movies for kids.

6. MVP: Most Valuable Primate

This is a mix of the movie Congo and the Bad News Bears, as a gifted primate named Jack is accidentally shipped off to Canada, where he escapes onto the ice of a boy's junior ice hockey practice. The kids notice a knack for the game in the primate and ride him all the way to the championship game. It didn't win any awards, but it's a monkey playing ice hockey.

5. Score: A Hockey Musical

Farley Gordon is a home-schooled kid, who's kept isolated by his parents. Little do they know he slips out to play shinny hockey with some local kids. He gets so good, he's drafted into the juniors, and is faced with new challenges of a more physical brand of hockey. It's a musical, in line with things like High School Musical. It's out of Canada, and it's mediocre at best, but it has an appeal to kids, and it carries a decent message.

4. Sticks and Stones

This is based upon a true story, where an American pee-wee hockey team headed to Canada for a game, only to be greeted with angry war protesters, against America's assault on the Persian Gulf. The American children bore the brunt of an angry mob, and the Canadian team's captain, a year later, invited the American boys back for a Friendship Tournament.

3. Strange Brew

This is a comedy that doesn't directly include ice hockey as a theme, but it does carry through with the hilarious escapades of Bob and Doug McKenzie, who run their own cable show in Canada, called "The Great White North." It follows the bungling brothers as they try and reclaim the Elsinore Brewery for the rightful owner, an orphan named Pam, from the current brew-master and two teams of hypnotized hockey players. It may be a bit dated, and it's full of references to beer, so it may not be for everyone, but it's full of laughs the whole family can enjoy.

2. Miracle

Everyone old enough to remember the 1980 Winter Olympics remembers the Miracle on Ice. This is the story of the team and its coach. It may be for an older child, but it's a family movie by Disney that offers an inspirational story of a team of amateurs beating the best in the world.

1. The Mighty Ducks

Emilio Estevez stars in this Disney produced movie, about a former pee-wee hockey star, who lost his confidence by missing a clutch goal in the championship game. He grows up to be a self-centered hot shot lawyer, who is arrested for a DUI, and is charged by the judge to serve community service by coaching the worst pee-wee hockey team in the league, called D-5. He later renames the team the Ducks, and coaches them all the way to the championship game against his former coach.

Honorable Mention: The Sweater

This one isn't long enough to be considered one of the best hockey movies for kids, as it is a ten minute cartoon short, but it's a great one surrounding the national sport of the great white north, about a Quebec City boy, who dreams of having a Maurice "The Rocket" Richard Montreal Canadiens jersey, only to receive a Toronto Maple Leafs jersey instead. He's devastated, but learns a valuable lesson.

While none of these would be considered for an Academy Award, they are entertaining for the whole family.
